On the move…again
I’m back on a plane- heading back to the ‘better’ hemisphere, as my friend calls it, although my friends back home would probably disagree. I think I’m just lucky to be traveling again. Before I go into detail about the plane I’m on, and the fact that I’m writing this blog from the plane (its got free wifi), I thought I’d try to write a little about my experiences back home.
First, it was a huge culture shock to be back, and usually I seem to handle culture shock pretty well considering my traveling in the past, but this time it was definitely weirder and harder. Everything in Boston was as it had been when I had left, yet a bit ‘off’ (ie: different, new). I think, had I kept in tune with the changes (physical changes mostly) via news (internet) etc., maybe I wouldn’t have felt so strange. New buildings seem to have popped up overnight (a year xandra, a year), and new places, restaurants, roadways…it was a bit overwhelming to tell the truth.
It was fantastic to visit with friends, and family- especially seeing my niece who was just a few weeks old when I left. I truly was amazing how many great friends I’ve made living in Boston in the last few years, and I’m very thankful for that.
And then there was the weather! Having come from spring, it was just strange to show up in cold, wet New England weather- trees bare, coats on, christmas tree lights everywhere. And then last night (my last night) it snowed. Sort of a going away present. I really love snow! And I can’t say I’ll be used to christmas in summertime, it’s just not the same.
Anyway, back to this flight-it’s with Virgin American and it’s super swank. Blue led lights above, video screens and leather (pleather) seating, and there’s free wifi until Jan 15th!!! Even the video they show is swank, it actually caters to those who fly all the time and has some hilarious cartoon style characters. This is what happens when you leave the US. Some things never change, some things should really really change but don’t then some things change for the better that make it a great place to be. Yes, the small things I say!
I am off to San Fran now, for 7 hours, until my next flight takes off to Auckland. Happy St. Nicholas day to my family (it’s a german tradition), to my niece and nephew who faithfully put out there boots last night. And thanks to all my friends who welcomed me back with open arms and shooed me away to go on this next flight. Love you guys!!!
